Architect

George Nimmons

DETAILS:

Inside Mana Contemporary’s historic building, designed by architect George Nimmons, you will find dozens of artist studios, exhibition spaces, a library and more. The former Commonwealth Edison warehouse now serves many of the city’s most significant arts organizations and artists of diverse disciplines—including painters, sculptors, photographers, performers, and artist-led collectives. The building plays a vital role in the contemporary local cultural scene. Nimmons believed that industrial buildings should create a pleasant environment for workers, as well as providing an attractive asset to their neighborhoods. A picturesque focal point is the brick tower with church-like gothic windows rendered in terra cotta.

ENTRANCE INSTRUCTIONS:

Use the main entrance located on the east side of the building.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

Visit the expansive art studios and gallery spaces to get a look at the creative processes of resident artists. There is also the chance to explore the Monira Foundation special exhibition featuring the work of Candida Alvarez, in addition to diverse exhibitions throughout the building.
